Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA Regulations)

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in several areas, including public accommodations. In order for a business or building to be ADA compliant, its entrances must meet certain requirements and be navigable by individuals with disabilities.

These regulations are enforced by federal law and apply to all commercial buildings constructed after 1991:

  • Commercial building doors must be able to accommodate wheelchairs.
  • Minimum width/minimum clearance of 36" (54" for doors at the end of a hallway).
  • Double doors that swing open must have an opening at least 48" wide.
  • Door handles must not require pinching or twisting to open.
  • Door handles must be easily operable with just one hand.
  • Door handles must be no more than 48" above floor level.
  • Doors must open/close with an applied force of fewer than 5 pounds.
  • Doors cannot close in less than 3 seconds.
  • Automatic doors must be stoppable with fewer than 15 pounds of force.
  • Automatic doors must take longer than 3 seconds to open.

In addition, all exterior entrances to a commercial building must have a wheelchair ramp that leads to a wheelchair-accessible path. The path must allow direct wheelchair access to public sidewalks and streets, accessible parking spaces, etc. and must connect directly to an interior wheelchair-accessible route.

During our commercial door installations and security system installations, Great Lakes Security Hardware experts optimize your entryway by first stabilizing the door frame and complying with ADA regulations. From simple office door installation and storefront door installation to commercial fire door installation, we’ll make sure every public entrance point in each location is safely accessible to those who need it.

Every commercial building has its own unique challenges and requirements, which is why we conduct a professional security assessment at the start of each job. No matter what your needs may be, our sliding, revolving, and swing storefront systems (including commercial entrance doors) offer several ways for you to meet accessibility standards.
